Penang Longest Trail Hike 2008

On: Monday, September 8, 2008

Trail: Teluk Bahang Forest Park - Station 10 - Bukit Laksamana (Eagle Point) -Station 1 -Penang Hill

Duration: 6-7 hours

It was 6am in the morning and the rain finally ceased after pounding non-stop the whole night. We were determined to continue with the hike no matter rain or shine. We headed for Youth Park where we had booked a taxi to take us to our starting point at Teluk Bahang. As we planned to descend from Penang Hill via the Jeep road, it was our plan to have a car parked there. The taxi driver was already waiting there as we arrived at Youth Park just before 8am. We had booked the taxi on the evening prior to the hike from Sunshine Taxi at a cost of RM40. Reasonable?

Entrance to the Teluk Bahang Forest Park, our starting point.

From then on, it was all jungle trail and to our surprise it was very well marked. 15mins into the hike, the rain poured again and "out" came the raincoats while "in" goes the cameras. Damn...gotta get the waterproof camera. Although it was raining quite heavily then, we were shielded in most parts by the thick vegitation and timber-high trees. The ground was treacherous though as streams of water flowed down at high speeds. But then again, we were quite glad that it was cooling and the breeze was really refreshing. Breathing in the cool air really made this trip worth-while.
After 2 hours in soaking rain, we reached our first rest-stop at the peak of Laksaman Hill or Eagle point as they call it. This man-made structure constructed in the middle of the dense forest provided us with temporary shelter. The rain had subsided by then, but it was a dissapointment as our view were blocked by the thick mist.
After 5+ hours, we finally stepped foot on the tarred road leading to Penang Hill. The rain was still relentless and when there is rain, there are leeches as Chong discovered later. This fat leech had gorged itself with Chong's blood without him realizing.
We had lunch at the Hill top's cafeteria. As the funicular train service is still down, there weren't many operators. Moreover it was the fasting month. The high carbs-intake of Fried Maggi Goreng + Telur Dadar + Hot Milo did not stopped us from shivering as the temperature plummeting below 20 degrees. And there is another hours' descend to the foot of the hill....
The END.

It was a great hike overall. The Penang forestry department really take safety into consideration by fencing up many dangerous cliffs.

It was really great experience while hiking in the rain through jungle trail. I can imagined we were stepped on every steep slopes with stream-like water gushing through our feet.

Yes! We must attempt it again during the dry season, probably early next year.

I agree. The trail was very well marked with assisting ropes all along the way. This is way too much pampering :)

Yes. We must create another Penang Ultra Longest Trail.

Teluk Bahang Forest Park → Station 10 → Laksamana Hill → Station 1 → Penang Hill → Tiger Hill → Ayer Itam Dam → Balik Pulau

I think this journey will take approximately 9 to 10 hours ascending and descending.

Alrite that is interesting, Penang's Ultra-Longest Trail. Will book my calendar for it.

The hiking date might be tentatively either on 22nd November 2008 or 13th December 2008.

Rough distance estimation for this Penang Ultra Longest Trail Expedition is approximately 23.5km, starting from Teluk Bahang Forest Park and ending at Balik Pulau Market.

Yeah! Should be the great one!. :-)

Alrite, hopefully better weather this time so that we can catch the view at Eagle's point. Btw Gin Chun and Chong on?

kazuolim said...

Ja, hopefully with blue sky and cool wind. Otherwise, will plan another session for this climb. :-)

I think Gin Chun is on as the ending point is just right in front of his house. His accuse , too early lah, later not enough sleep lah bla bla bla bla.... Is not the solid reason anymore. :-P

For Chong, I think high chances he will join as the event is in either Nov or Dec. Will confirm with him again.

Hi, just wondering, if you guys invite others/open to all to join for laksamana hill?

I only been once to Laksamana and and hike back since it was raining very heavily.

Thus, i didn't manage to complete the whole trail to Penang Hill.

Hi Meiyi, glad to know that you're interested in hiking too. It was also raining heavily during our hike but we continued. We are doing another hike themed the "Penang Ultra Longest Hike" from Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau sometime in Dec. You can find out more in my events chart on Facebook.
